Best Forex Brokers for Italian Traders

Italy follows the same EU leverage and protection framework as the rest of the bloc, but CONSOB is unusually aggressive about blocking unauthorised brokers outright, which makes checking a broker's actual authorisation status especially worthwhile here.

What Italian regulation actually means here

CONSOB (Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa) made the ESMA-aligned CFD leverage measures permanent in 2019: 30:1 on major FX pairs, 20:1 on minor pairs/gold/major indices, 10:1 on other commodities and non-major indices, 5:1 on stocks/ETFs, and 2:1 on crypto, with mandatory negative balance protection. In the event of an authorised firm’s insolvency, the Fondo Nazionale di Garanzia covers eligible retail clients up to €20,000.

What sets Italy apart is enforcement: using powers from the “Growth Decree,” CONSOB can order Italian ISPs to block access to the websites of unauthorised (“abusive”) operators, and has done so for more than 1,700 platforms since the program began in July 2019, with new sites added on a rolling basis. Forex and binary-options offerings are cited as the most common category targeted. An EU-passported broker can generally serve Italian clients without a separate CONSOB licence, but given how actively CONSOB polices this space, confirming proper authorisation or passport notification matters more here than in most countries on this list.

Before you fund an account: check CONSOB's own register/notification lists. A broker that's fine in another EU country can still end up on Italy's blocked-site list if its Italian notification isn't in order.

Italian traders generally fund accounts via SEPA bank transfer (“bonifico”), PostePay prepaid cards (used by a large share of Italian consumers for online payments), MyBank account-to-account transfers, BANCOMAT Pay, or standard Visa/Mastercard.

Account availability, entity, and protections still vary by broker no matter the overall score, so always confirm which specific legal entity you'd be onboarded to as an Italian resident before depositing.
